Sofia Vergara has been single for nearly a year, but only now is the Modern Family opening up about what led to her surprise divorce from Joe Manganiello.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper El País, Sofia confirmed the speculation that their marriage ended because they had different goals for the future. Specifically, Joe wanted to have children of his own, while Sofia doesn’t want anymore (she already has an adult son from a past relationship).

Sofia Admits She Didn’t Want Kids With Joe

“Well, I’m newly divorced from my second husband, who I was with for 10 years,” she candidly explained. “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger. He wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.”

“I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore,” Sofia went on. “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother.”

Sofia was previously married to Joe Gonzalez from 1991 to 1993, with whom she has a son named Manolo. She almost married again during her engagement to Nick Loeb, but things got messy after their break-up when Loeb tried to use embryos they’d frozen in hopes of starting a family together. Sofia challenged him, saying she didn’t want him to bring their kids into the world when they were broken up.

Loeb filed multiple lawsuits seeking to gain custody of the embryos to have them implanted in a surrogate. Sofia opposed this, leading to a highly publicized legal battle, which she eventually won. She later married Joe Manganiello in 2015, only for their decade-long relationship to come to an end in 2023, much to the surprise of fans.

Sofia Says She’s Open To Love Again

While Sofia has walked down the aisle twice already, she says she’s not opposed to doing it again if she finds the right person. The only catch? If he wants kids, he better have already had them. But the actress insists it’s not a priority for her right now, considering she and Joe finalized their divorce only last year.

“So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children,” Sofia explained. “I’m almost in menopause, it’s the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life. That’s what I have to do.”
